“Acting is living truthfully under imaginary circumstances.”
The Meisner Technique uses specific exercises that help the actor connect with others onstage/onscreen, and releases natural and believable actions and reactions.
Legendary acting teacher, Sanford Meisner, developed his technique of actor training at the same time as – and in reaction to – Lee Strasberg’s “Method Acting.” Famed theatre and film director, Elia Kazan, said “If you get an actor that Sandy Meisner has trained, you’ve been blessed.”
Actors that trained with Meisner (who died in 1997) include James Gandolfini, Jack Nicholson, Anthony Hopkins, Jeff Bridges, Jeff Goldblum, Robert Duvall, Allison Janney, Diane Keaton, Gregory Peck, Joanne Woodward, Sigourney Weaver, and many more.
In Waco’s first Meisner-based acting class for the general public, you’ll learn basic principles in our first four class meetings, which you’ll then apply to scenes you’ve selected to work on with a partner from the class.

Luann Jennings studied the Meisner Technique for a year in New York City with Larry Silverberg, who was a protégé of Sanford Meisner and wrote The Sanford Meisner Approach series of workbooks. Luann has an MFA in directing and worked professionally as a director and acting instructor in Atlanta before moving to New York. She came to Waco a year ago to help build our cultural community. More info about Luann.
I’d like to take the class but really can’t afford it. Do you have any type of financial assistance?
We’ll be glad to arrange a work-study arrangement serving InSite or a local theatre company or arts organization to help cover the costs of your class. Email Luann to discuss it.
Is this class for beginning or more advanced actors?
Any actor at any experience level will benefit from the Meisner Technique; however, we discourage actors under age 18 from enrolling in a class with adults. If there is sufficient demand, we’d consider starting a teen class.
Experience level does make a difference in scenework, so we’ll seek to match actors who are at the same level as scene partners. You may register with a friend as your scene partner.
What if I know I’ll need to miss a class meeting?
An absence in the Introduction segment can be made up with private coaching with Luann before the next class meeting. If you must miss two sessions in the Introduction segment, please contact Luann in advance to discuss arrangements. If you must miss three of the Introduction sessions, please wait to start with the next term.
In the Scene Study segment, you will select the weeks you’ll work your scenes so you can accommodate planned absences. Unplanned absences will inconvenience your scene partner and the class. Your scene may schedule one make-up session with Luann due to an unplanned absence, but you’ll miss the advantage of getting feedback from other class members.
Will you offer the class again?
Yes! We plan to hold the Introduction segment as often as needed, and Scene Study three or more times per year. Once you’ve taken the Introduction segment, you may join any future Meisner-based Scene Study segment.
For any further questions, or to reserve your space in the class, email Luann.
